Today I am going to tell you about one of the most famous fishing camps in the world for exotic fishing: Sette cama adventure. If you are dreaming of catching monsters and having a great time, this is the perfect place to fish. In my previous articles I talked about the Denis Point and Santa Clara cap which are spots close to Libreville (you can read those articles again by clicking on the links below: Pointes Denis , Cap santa clara).
LOCATION :
This fishing camp located in the protected reserve of Sette Cama is one of the most famous in the world and will welcome you in optimal conditions to offer you unforgettable experiences. But how to get to sette cama and how to organize yourself?
The camp is located in the south of Gabon, about 2 days drive from Libreville near the town of Gamba. By car the journey seems long but having done it, I advise you to do it because the landscapes you will encounter are magnificent. Before the Covid 19 pandemic, a plane landed directly at Gamba airport and you were received directly at the airport by the camp, thus avoiding 2 days of driving. At the moment we do not know when the flights will resume. Even if with the covid all trips are cancelled the information I am about to provide can be very useful.
THE CAMP :
Once you arrive on site, after your long journey or not ;) , you will arrive at the fishing camp where you will be welcomed by Nadine and Eric, the owners of the camp. They will make you feel at home in a very friendly and family atmosphere. You will also meet the fishing guides who will come with you to the pass to guide you and brief you before each fishing trip.
Made entirely of wood, you will find a place where you can eat and drink after your fishing sessions. The rooms are scattered around the camp, small huts with all the necessary comforts to have a good time, spacious and with air conditioning (important for a good rest when tracking Gabonese monsters :) )
If you get up early in the morning, you will probably see one or two elephants in the middle of the camp feeding. This is also the spirit of sette cama.
FISHING :
Let's get to the heart of the matter, FISHING! I don't know where to start. I've only been to one fishing camp in Gabon and this is it. If I had to use only one word to describe this place I would say extraordinary. The quantity and variety of fish in its waters are really out of the ordinary. I have never seen so many fish in one place in my life. You will find all kinds of exotic fish: tarpon, red carp, barracuda, caranx, captain, otolithe, elops, bulldog sharks...
The camp is located inside the lagoon, so you will take the boat for about 30 min to go to the pass further north. Once there the guides will show you where to cast to optimize your fishing. Be careful, the first bites can be surprising ;) . Generally you will fish at sunrise and sunset. The times will depend on the tides. But don't worry, the guides will be there to optimize your fishing. If you want to fish during the day, a surfcasting spot near the camp will be a good ally to rest while fishing.
For sette cama fishing, I advise you to take the appropriate equipment. The presence in number of sharks can sometimes prevent you from reeling in your fish and consequently break your lines. The lures to use are once again popers, sticks baits and plugs. You will find my choices in the article dedicated to them by clicking on the link. The plugs and sticks baits are to be favoured when there is no light and the popers when it is daylight or at nightfall.
Again, the guides will always be there to advise you on which lures to take. As far as rods and reels are concerned, I have already mentioned them in my first article which you can read by clicking on the link.
Fishing with sette cama is exceptional. You can fish at the mouth of the lagoon as well as in front of the camp or on the beach by surfcasting. Everything is possible. I guarantee that you will be able to catch monsters and fish of unimaginable size.
If I have one piece of advice to give you, if you ever go to sette cama, never give up. You might be discouraged at times, but don't give up. It has happened that fishermen have gone fishing for a week and it was the last night that they caught the most fish or their biggest catch. So don't forget to be persistent when fishing.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :
Even if your trip is focused on fishing, the camp offers boat and walking safaris to observe animals. It will be possible for you to see elephants, hippos, monkeys and gorillas. The biodiversity is enormous and if you are very lucky, you might even see the Gabonese panther.
If you wish to organise a trip to sette cama, you can contact the camp directly via this link: sette cama adventure . By sending an email, you will get the different rates and packages to stay at the camp.
In my opinion, if you want to organise a fishing trip to Gabon, I would advise you to stay 4 or 5 days in Sette Cama. First of all, not everyone can afford to stay there for a long time because it is quite expensive even if the services are all included and the standard is very high. Secondly, Gabon is very good for fishing, you can also catch big fish near Libreville, and fish for pelagic (blue marlin, sailfish...) off the capital. Sette Cama is obviously a must, but you can organise a very versatile trip and visit the whole country at once.
You don't have to budget your trip around sette cama, but vary the activities so you can touch everything. There is a tour operator in Libreville, which I will tell you about later, which offers a whole range of sea fishing activities and which has a perfect command of fishing in Gabon.
